To travel to most foreign countries, you must apply for a Visa card.
There are multiple Visa cards, each created depending on the duration of your stay and what your intention is to do at that foreign country.
For example, if you are travelling to China as a tourist for three months; you apply and pay for a Tourist Visa, which is valid for three months.
OR
You can apply for and purchase a Working Visa which (usually given to you by your company) allows you to work at that foreign country for however long your Visa is active. If your Visa expires, you can simply apply for a new one. (Please note that your application can be denied and will need to keep on applying and paying the application fees.)
OR
You can also get a Family, Spouse or De Facto Visa, which allows you to stay and work in a country only if you have a family member or you are in a commited relationship with someone that is a resident of that country and wishes to sponsor you.
Most Asian countries will require you to fill out a form at the port of entry for a holiday Visa. The form will be processed and you will be asked to pay a fee (depending on the country), ranging from $25 - $100 (usually paid in USD).
Here is a link to a websit which easily allows you to select your Visa features (if you're heading to China!) and order them online.
